| In 1966, missionary James Hester and a group of Americans living in Milan founded the Milan Baptist Church in response to the need they felt for a place for English speakers to worship, fellowship, and study the Bible together. Their first meeting place was a 16th Century building, actually a de-consecrated Catholic chapel in very poor repair, on Via Paolo Lomazzo, just north of Castello Sforzesco. The group restored the building but eventually had to leave due to unreasonable rent demands.
Their next place of worship was in a building at Viale Beatrice d'Este, 19, near Porto Romano, which they shared for a time with the International Church, an offshoot of the L'Abri Fellowship of Huemoz, Switzerland. The International Church, pastored first by Hurvey Woodson and then by Juan Mesas, ministered in Milan for only a brief time, mainly to Italian Christians, before dissolving in the 1970's.
Not long afterwards, this English-speaking group changed its name to Milan Bible Church since there was no longer any Southern Baptist involvement in the work. They invited UFM International, an interdenominational American faith mission whose work in Milan was led by a veteran Italian missionaries, Ray and Lois Whitlock, to provide spiritual oversight for the ministry. Since the 1970's Milan Bible Church has been pastored on a part-time basis by a succession of UFM Missionaries including Ray Whitlock, Ron Fisher, Al Nucciarone, Tom Job, and Jim McMahan. When the owner of the building on Viale Beatrice d'Este refused to renew the rental contract, Milan Bible Church met in various locations until it found it's present home with UFM's Italian-speaking
Chiesa Stadera group which meets at Via Isimbardi, 4.
Milan Bible Church has continued to grow over the years from its small beginnings of 10-15 believers to its present size of well over 100 in attendance each Sunday. In 1988, a small group of Filipino believers joined Milan Bible Church and has since grown into the Filipino Fellowship with a membership of well over 50 committed believers.
In the late 1990's UFM International began searching for someone to serve full time as pastor of Milan Bible Church. In 1999, Jim & Lynda Kutnow responded to that need, came to Italy, and since June of 2000 have devoted
themselves full time to the church's ministry. Milan Bible Church currently ministers to English speaking believers from many different areas of the world including Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sweden, South Africa, and the USA. Our elder board is made up of
one American, three Filipinos, and one New Zealander.
